My name is Jasmine Smart and I am a multi-disciplinary artist based in Wiltshire, UK, with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. I work in various mediums and my art will often feature animals and botany.
The passion I have for the natural world and the connection between humans and nature is what drives my inspiration. Through each piece - be it intricate and small or bold and extravagant - my purpose is to evoke a sense of connection with nature, and I invite viewers to pause, reflect, and appreciate the abundance of beauty within the world around us.

I live in a quaint, old cottage with my husband, enjoying the challenge of renovating our home and growing our own produce - endeavours that feed into my broader interests of sustainability and renewability. Given the location, I am constantly surrounded by nature and it's wonders, further feeding my inspiration for art and a desire to connect with nature.

In 2021 I entered my first and so far, only art competition: The David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year, in which I was a shortlisted selected finalist, something I am very honoured to have been selected for and taken part in. For this exhibition I created one of my most ambitious drawings, an A1 coloured pencil drawing of a Sun Bear, entitled 'Market Value'. A beautiful animal that is sadly, like many other species, subjected to poaching for their bear bile.
I hoped to create awareness to their plight, highlighting their vulnerability by capturing a Sun Bears gentle and unique personality. After drawing 'Market Value', I have created many drawings of endangered and vulnerable animals using coloured pencils. This series of work has minimal background, to focus attention solely on the animal being portrayed. Recently, I have since transitioned my style and focus into acrylics and mixed medium, focusing on local wildlife, their importance and relationship with the local environment.

This change in direction led me to create my recent collection of work: 'The Border Collection', inspired by animals found across Wiltshire and UK. These works of art feature intricate and ornate borders, inspired by history and the representation of animals throughout art. The borders are windows, framing a moment captured in time, bringing the subject into view. The whimsical tones draw upon pre-Raphaelites, art Nouveau and medieval illumination manuscripts, tying together various movements throughout art history. Each piece documents a relationship with the subject and how life events, learning and experience can influence the feel and direction of my work.

This collection was exhibited in late 2024 at the Corsham Gallery. I have displayed at the Black Swan Gallery, Oxford Old Fire Station Gallery, Frome Tower Gallery.
